Does anyone have any thoughts on these two HiDef DVD formats? I just broke down and got a Toshiba HD-XA2 player. Upconversion from this player on SD DVDs is fantastic! But I'm seeing a lot of BD releases coming out, over the HD DVD variety. Makes me wonder if I chose the correct format.

As far as I know, Blueray has got 25 GB of memory where as HD DVD got 15 GB. Also if you are in gaming, PS3 will support Blueray disks. Also I think that Blueray players are more expensive.

Not too much into the gaming aspect. I went into HD DVD because there were more title releases that I liked at the time. Now it seems BD is having a flurry of new releases, while HD DVD is kind of lagging. I guess I'll just have to play the waiting game and see how things progress...

rambler,
not to make you feel bad bu tyou should have waited as most analysts are saying sony will win this one as opposed to the VHS/Betamax war (i was a huge betamax fan by the way and i dont understand how a more compact tape lost to the bulky VHS!). the advantage for BR, as you pointed out, that many sony produced movies will only come out on blue ray and some of them like james bond and spiderman are big hits. also, the reason why you should have waited, regardless of the added value of being able to play playstation is some companies, like samsung recently, have released players with both types of technologies integrated! thats a very good idea if you ask me. you wont miss on any movie if thats your concern! another bad news is, microsoft declined to release their new xbox with a HD-dvd attached to it like the ps3 with 2 devices in one which indicates that microsoft is not too confident in the eventual outcome of the new dvd tehnologies. i would recommend if you can to trade your hd-dvd for eithe r a BR or for a BR+HD-DVD. if you are into PS3 then a BR should be your immediate choice. i almost got the PS3 to be able to use it for both purposes but i will wait until the prices go down. BR are not selling as well as they anticipated due to pricing issues, i believe. sony may drop the price in order not to lose the gaming contest. but being able to play movies is a huge advantage really. maybe waiting is the best option before you decide to do anything with your device! |

I'm with you on this it's taken USB over seven years to become common place BR or whatever will be similar IMO I'm sure this is mainly lead by USA and a few far eastern contries, most other don't even have HD feed. This is for home cinema/thearter buffs until prices and market forces kick in Actually before Betamax/VHS, Phillips had home VCR years before Sony and JVC. It was like a continuous 8 track casette and similary they had 12 inch laser dics way before CD's as we now know them Rgds Steve |

I've have a 50inch DLP which has halved in 3 years I now fancy a 52 LCD Samsung but comparered to US prices they are expensive here, where the only difference seems dual PAL/NTSC tuner and may be dual voltage. This cant be worth another 1000US IMO Rgds Steve |

Steve, ah...the US. i used to live in the US. its indeed the best place to buy goodies from for the most competitive prices. the Us usually releases gadgets first and the cheapest. we cant dream of the same prices here simply cause the market is not big enough. an example, the PS3 was released in the state for 600 USD (60 gigs) and in europe it was released for 600 euros! lol..thats a huge difference and ofcourse the price in the GCC had to follow the euro (2500 AED) for some reason although the currency is pegged to USD here.. :P another example, i was checking on this nice headphone by bose called quiet comfort 2 and the price here in dubai is 1400 AED. in the US is 300 USD (300 AED cheaper!). i called my friend in the US, he bought for me and now its being shipped to me which comes out still cheaper. i was really annoyed however with the samsung 40 inch LCD which i bought last year. it is literally half the price now..which equates to losing 5500 AED! those wonderful people from ART lied to us by announcing showing WC2006 live through HD signal. it never happened. the HD been released in the US years ago and still no sign of it here. we pretend in UAE to be advanced with new technologies but in reality we are way behind the likes of the US and Japan/Korea. the only way to enjoy my HD TV is to buy one of those players but im waititng for now. im going to invest rather in a new phone inshallah! Please edit one word in your previous mail so not to offend the more sensative user. thanks in advance I agree US in particular is by far cheaper on many products, more alarming is Europe is also cheaper than the UAE on quite a few consumer goods electronic/watches etc. I dont know what has happend to change it here but tax free does not mean cheaper any more you really need to be careful Rgds Steve |
