What pocket camera should I buy my son for his birthday on Friday ??
Sony T7/T9 ?? Cannon Ix55/70 ?? Fuji ?? Others ?? My fav option at the moment is the Cannon Ixus 55 as it's relative good price with a range of features and small, although I think a newer version is comming out. Your personal thoughts appreciated rgds Steve Rgds Steve |

Hi Steve,
How old is your Son? Also, is he keen on photography or is it just for "fun"? Also, is this his first camera? Sorry for so many questions; its much easier to answer when i know all these details. From the options you have mentioned, i would suggedt you go for the Ixus as they are rugged, produce good quality images and are worth the dough. Sony are overrated as far as camera's are concerned. They make up for their poor lens quality by offering sleek form-factor's. Fuji are usually good for SLR and high-end camera's. Their point-to-shoot range leave a lot to be desired so i would suggest you scratch that off your list. Casio exilim are EXCELLENT and highly underrated. They produce great quality images, are quite sturdy and usually about $100 cheaper than the other camera's in its range. Its not widely known, but pretty much EVERY digital camera uses a Casio LCD as they are the pioneers in this field All in all, i would suggest the Casio Exilim series even if woken up at 3am from sleep! I'd go for the Fuji F10 or F11. 6mp, very high iso, excellent build quality, long battery life...
The only small problem is the type of memory, it's Xd card The Fuji Z2 also looks very good and small. But you'll sure take better pictures than with the Sony DSC-T7. The T7 is really good for daylight pictures but for the rest, forget it. In Dubai, you have the same chance to want to take pictures day or night, so high iso sensitivity is very important! Forget the Sony T9 at iso 640, even with the optical stabilizer, you'll be disappointed. Put the picture quality first, not the design! I know it's difficult to resist to a nicely designed camera but the main point is to be happy when you see the picture on your computer screen. I have no opinion about the Ixus but if you give me time I'm sure I can find reviews and make me an opinion... One more thing : Fuji will release a 3200iso camera, the F30. It sould be released in may and might be a real killer! |

Ta, a bit late now I got him the cannon Isus55, I think a 60 is comming out and the 70 was too big, he was not going for the Casio, snob factor. Looked at the Fugi 9mp you suggested before a bit too big He's happy enough with it, gave it too him this morning rgds Steve Rgds Steve |

Too bad
Anyway, I'm sure the Ixus55 is a good camera. Maybe you'll tell us what you think about it later, after a few pics. But remember what I told you, high iso sensitivity is the key for that kind of camera. With a F11, I can take a picture anywhere, anytime! There is so many bad pictures I took with the T7, so much disappointment that now, I prefer not to put the design in first position. |
