SAN FRANCISCO - Palm Inc. is teaming up with Microsoft Corp. to launch a Windows-based version of the Treo smart phone, marking the first time the handheld computer pioneer will sell a device based on its former rival's software.

The new Treo 700 will be offered through Verizon Wireless, according to market analyst Rob Enderle and other industry sources.

What is funny is that the Treo 700w will have WM 2005 and support landscape switching. Tell me this, whats the use of landscape on a "square" screen?!?! Big Grin

With the team up with Verizon, that means that it will be a CDMA PDA because Verizon uses CDMA and not GSM protocol gunfire

I wont be surprised if they release a GSM version simultaneously. People have been "selling organs" trying to convince someone to bring out a treo with WM and well, i guess their surgical trauma has now payed off. Personally i dont know what the big hooplah about Treo's is, I frankly am not very fond of the design.

I suppose so, but did you really like the Treo form factor?

If people really like the Treo form factor and are dying for a device like that with WM 5.0, then i suggest they go ahead and buy the HP6515. I had a play with it and personally i hated it, but if thumboard and square screen is one's preference then this is it.

I don’t think this would be our target market, but they might try it! The Treo is getting old I was expecting something new in hardware design.

This really makes me respect bowdown Palm. They have their own sources to build the hardware, so why lose their customers? Now, Palm customers have the choice to use the downgoing Palm operating system, or the upgoing Windows Mobile 5.0 slap

It is really a positive decision made by Palm. Compare it with HP and Nokia rotfl

HP have the largest share of handheld users despite a stall in their production line and their unability to catchup with customer's demand in specifications, integrated phone and PDA, desige, weight and many more. And when they make a funny 240 X 240 screen with quite competitive specification. But still they are far away from competition boxing

On the other hand Nokia people are very generous by giving away their customer base of people who are switching to the PPC world and do nothing about it. We have been hearing for so many months about Nokia's smartphone, but upto now, I don't Think So powerfull PDA+phone from them in the market yet!

Read more about this on MSNBC and don't forget to watch the two big guys, Bill Gates (Chairman MS) and Ed Colligan (Palm CEO) in an exclusive interview with CNBC
