Hi
I bought a IPAQ 5550 with that in mind to use it as cellular phone as well as PDA w/lan..but searchin around the net this dream certainly has fainted a bit as HP now does not want to continue to supprt their GSM/GPRS wireless sleeve. I know there one could use other options like a sleeve with a GSM CF card, but I think they will turn off of turn off the IPAQ, thus leaving me with no cellphone coverage..bummer..and the battery capasity makes it impossible to run the 5550 constantly. One option I have tought about is to degrade the software to PPC 2002 and then run the patch as Mohd mentions in his excelent review of the 5450 with above mentioned sleeve. Has anyone tried this? Ok, so the big question is, should I try to sell my new 5550 and buy a qtec2002 or is there hope...any thoughts? edge -- |

Downgrading from PPC2003 to PPC2002 is not a good idea IMHO. Personally I’ve been always looking forward to have a powerful converged device; I’ve been searching for the best combination until I transformed my iPAQ h5450 into a phone using a PC card expansion pack plus with a GSM/GPRS option globe card. It became really bulky, of course it is the same with the GSM sleeve. In addition, this solution and even the GSM/GPRS sleeve will not give you the best PDA phone experience; you will not be able to use Bluetooth headset and MMS not available. Either you buy an XDA II or you wait for iPAQ h6000 series to be released early next year. I would get one for myself, because it is rumored to have the form factor of the 22xx series. I never had a problem with the size of the h5450, but using as a phone it must be smaller.

Thanks,
So the ipaq6000 will have a GSM phone features, in addition to all the other communication protocols, nice...I read somewhere that i would be launched mars 2004, is this correct? Sounds like I will have to try to sell my newly purchaced 5550, while I still can get some value back...being a student, money does not seem to grow on trees.. What about the TI wanda project, I read about that some months ago, but it is still only a concept design, and will not be released, right? -- |

quote: It is actually a reference design. It is possible that hp will base it’s h6000 on this design. |

That was what I meant..
..and if they choose that design, I would not be disappointed...Think it looks great. Have a distant friend that works in HP, he confirms that there are many "goodies" on the doorstep...BUT I want one now..hehe -- |

iPAQ is nice, but so are many other devices. Just like a Lexus is nice but so is a BMW, and a Mercedes and Ferari and Porsche and .....

Alman, What are you comparing! IPAQ is simply the Mercedes Benz of Pocket PCs, your I-mate is nothing but Daihatsu.
No really the support you are getting from hp, that includes software, firmware, ROM updates and also the customer support, they have for every customer a database that’s in their call center, they normally call you back again and ask you who hp representative helped and are you satisfied with the service. I go with customer service excellence and the quality of their product. It is what makes me wait for their new releases, even if they delayed. |
