Just wanted to get a feel of how everyone is connecting their network to their network devices over wifi.

Someone's asked me to recommend a hardware for them to out and purchase for home use (and yes she'd love to be able to browse from her pda2k).

In turn what would you guys recommend?

Universally renowned WiFi routers are from Linksys. They are supposed to be the best and that was the only reason i bought it.

If ur in Dubai and using Etisalat's DSL service, then u will haveta buy an ADSL Modem + Router combo. Jus buying a router is not going to help.

However, if ur using Sahm's ADSL service then just a router will suffice.

Another thing u shud know is that WEP is very important so that no one hacks into ur network. Most branded routers today come with WEP, so its not a problem....preferrably 128bit encryption.

Also, if u intend to use WiFi all over ue apartment or house, then just buying a router is not going to help as it has a ver limited range which means u will have to also invest in a repeater. The apprix price of any decent ADSL Modem with Router + Repeater shud cost approx abt AED 900.

Since the last post this is what I have managed to scrape together for my friend:

1. dlink access point x 1
2. usb wifi dongle x 2

According to you Docc, you definately need a router. Isn't there a way you can make the PC with the Etisalat's DSL work as a router, rather than going out and dishing out money for a router? Roll Eyes

I know I am going to sound so dumb by saying this but, "Doesn't WinXP have some sort of routing ability within itself?" (I sound so intelegent .. NOT!) Embarrassed

Hehe....Wish it was that simple Zakkhan. But it doesnt work that way.

For the WLAN to be accessible throughout the apartmnet/house, ur friend will need a ADSL Modem+Router and a Repeater. If its a big Villa, then perhaps 2 repeaters will be required; larger the area more the repeaters. But generally for abt 4000 Sq.Ft are, 1 repeater shud be enough.

How were u planning to connect the Etisalat's ADSL Modem to the AP?

connect the ADSL to the PC and the AP to the PC. Having the PC as a common thing and doing some 'WinXP magic' and making the having the net over the wireless connection.

the missing thing is .. what is that 'WinXP magic' ?
